Our first assignment is to watch President Obama tonight at 9 a.m., select three topics of interest that could possibly lead a newspaper story and have that information posted here before midnight. A CHALLENGE?!? We'll see!
After watching The State of the Union, my focus was turned towards certain aspects that President Obama focused on. For starters, he focuses on the fact that women deserve equal pay as men do within their jobs. He continued to explain that he feels mothers within our country should not have to sacrifice their jobs in order to take care of their children. This could most definitely be the front page conversation of any newspaper, due to the fact that it involves both Obama's view on working women in America, and where they stand while trying to be responsibile mothers. The President also focuses on issuance policies, most importantly health care, and that no individual will ever be denied the care they need for health purposes. He kept medicare at premiums flat while readily making this care available to all needed Americans. He continues to explain that these new laws, involving Obamacare, should not be shut down because they are continually positively impacting millions of Americans. This topic is a heated debate because certain individuals do not feel this policy is necessarily fair. As the headline of the newspaper, it would stir conversation because it involves what the President feels is correct, against what the rest of the country believes in. Last but not least, he discusses his views on Iran. President Obama will do all possible to stop the creation of explosive weapons and the possibilities of war. He wants to illuminate dangerous weapons as well as secure the safety of all Americans. All three of these topics would make great newspaper headlines because each of them are able to be debated. President Obama willingingly admits his viewpoints, but that doesn't mean his opinions will surround the thoughts of all Americans. His opinions are of course the ideas that are controlling our country, but creating them as leaded discussions would allow for major debates within our nation.
Immigration- President Obama states that our immigration system is broken, and Republicans and Democrats must work together and compromise to reach a solution. This will not only give more immigrants the opportunity to find economic success in the U.S., but will also help to strengthen the overall economy of the country. Deadlock in Congress- Obama says that the tendency for deadlock within Congress, as well as between Congress and the Executive branch has caused inefficiency which is unfair to the American people. This year, President Obama plans to change this by using his executive power to overrule some decisions made by Congress when he sees it fit. Economic Inequality- This is becoming an increasingly prevalent issue in the U.S. To reverse this, President Obama pledges to take action, even without legislation, to strengthen the middle class (i.e. creating more jobs, lowering taxes for middle class and raising taxes for upper class, lowering cost of college).
Topic #1: Job talks/Employment • Properly equipping students with benefits/advantages • Taught skills necessary for modern world • Equality within job market for women • Will intervene in permitting process for projects to bring jobs to the market more quickly • Job creation • Will help factories be built to create jobs • Minimum wage raise
Topic #2: Sustainable America from within • Focus off of foreign oil • Half of manufacturing companies insourcing jobs • Reward and focus on companies who do not outsource jobs • Funding research from universities, pairing them with companies
Topic #3: Congress Inactivity • Inactive Congress “is not doing right by the American people” • Must serve the people in a unified, effective way • Present government as a strong voice to the people through these unified actions • “Year of Action” • Opportunity can only come if Congress plays its part in bettering lives of citizens
1. Bypassing Congress: With a deadlocked Congress, Obama made specific reference to "taking steps without legislation." Saying things like "America does not stand still - and neither will I," he made it obvious that he's going to use the remainder of his time in office to accomplish whatever possible using solely executive action. This would make an interesting story about the ways in which he's done so in the past, and how he intends to continue to do so in the future. 2. Gender Income Inequality Mentioning the gender inequality gap, Obama made it clear that he prioritizes gender equality in the workplace. He voices an aversion to a "Mad Men-like office environment," showing that he intends to help reduce inequalities between the genders. An interesting story could look at the current inequalities between men and women in the workplace, and what Obama has/is doing to change them. 3. Global Warming Saying that we are "closer to energy independence than we have been in decades," Obama made it clear that he also prioritizes clean energy. Claiming he will "cut red tape to get these [natural gas] factories built" and "use [his] authority to protect more of our pristine natural lands for future generations," an interesting story would be about how his policies have affected the environment in the past and how he intends to continue that progress into the future.
President Obama talked about his desire to insource jobs and to reward businesses based in America as opposed to those that outsourced their jobs to foreign nations. Obama states that insourcing would stimulate the economy and help small businesses, and the money saved by keeping jobs in America could be used to repair roads, ports, and infrastructure, all important components of a strong society.
President Obama expressed a need to continue to develop the use of American-based natural gas and energy. He stated that natural gas is more efficient, and that he would like America to be self-sufficient energy-wise, rather than relying on the Middle East for oil that would be more expensive. He also encouraged more funding for solar power, which would provide cleaner energy, a safer environment, and create more jobs in the process.
Finally, President Obama requested a reform of the current immigration system. He stated that a reform will grow our economy and shrink the nation's deficits by creating jobs for everybody, not just immigrants.
1. Job Creation: By lowering tax rates for business that choose not to outsource jobs to other countries President Obama plans to create incentive for for corporations to keep jobs at home. Additionally, Obama believes that by investing in alternative energy sources and decreasing our countries dependency on foreign fossil fuels more jobs will be available for federally funded research to create energy saving technologies and for manual labor jobs: the installation of solar panels in buildings. 2. Foreign Policy: President Obama made it clear that he intended to implement more sanctions against Iran and other American adversaries and would veto any bill sent to him by congress that attempt to hinder these efforts. The President intended to reassure Americans that we are capable of diplomatically dealing with other countries and will work with other countries to dismantle terrorist networks. 3. Wages: President Obama adressed the issue of the wage gap between men and women as well as the wage gap between the rich and the poor. The President fervently expressed his support of women's rights and advocated for allowing women to take paid pregnancy leave. He also encouraged businesses to raise the minimum wage for workers so that no family that earns an income would be forced to live in poverty.
-President Obama discussed women in the workplace and he believes that women deserve equal wages for equal work. The President stated in his speech that in the year 2014, this is an embarrassment.
2. Gun Control
-The President discussed gun control briefly when talking about citizenship. He stated that he keeps trying with or without Congress to help stop tragedies like in Sandy Hook.
3. Technology
-Obama stated in his State of the Union that he would like to open six new next generation technology hubs to help improve the economy. He believes that this will give us the chance to beat out competition for high-tech manufacturing jobs.
“Year of Action”: President Obama spoke about his displeasure with the static minimum wage despite the economic growth. He claimed that he plans to offer concrete, practical proposals to promote growth and support the middle class that will require Congressional approval. He stressed that while is would require congressional approval; he will go ahead with his plans using executive action.
Immigration reform: Obama stressed the importance of fixing our broken immigration system and that both Democrats and Republicans want reform. He quoted independent economists who stated that immigration reform could grow our economy and cut the deficits by approximately $1 trillion in the next twenty years. He claimed that if we make our country an easier place to come, more people would pour in to make their dreams come true which will make for a more prosperous market and a more attractive place for business to locate.
Equal play for equal work: Through out his speech, he mentioned his wife, Michelle Obama multiple times, including her in his opinions and praising her work with the obesity epidemic plaguing the nation. He then spoke about his embarrassment with work pay inequality, quoting that women still make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. Obama said he wants equal pay for equal work and wants to give women breaks with their familial obligations at work. He stressed his desire to move away from old-fashioned work standards for women and his belief that women are a key component in building a flourishing economy.
1. Climate change is a fact: The first topic that screamed "newspaper story" was when President Obama vehemently mentioned that climate change is a fact and that the issue should no longer be argued because the science accumulated over the years has all but closed the book on the matter. This topic works because the issue of climate change is still a divisive one not only among politicians but the general public as well.
2. Immigration reform: The topic of immigration reform is another possible newspaper story. The logistics of how exactly to go about this is still an ongoing argument in Congress but the President's main point he wanted to get across seemed to be that the faster we reform immigration, the better the economy will be as a whole.
3. Women in the workplace: One big topic the President hit upon in his speech was about gender equality in the workplace. He mentioned the fact that women still make 77 cents for every dollar men earn. He said that this gap in earning wages between genders should no longer be the case. Another point of his was the fact that women should be treated fairly and respectfully. The example he gave was the one of when a mother gives birth and has to choose between her job and her child. This ultimatum is a common one and should be done away with, he said. Needless to say all this got one of the biggest applause of the night.
1. Jobs: President Obama focused on several aspects of the job market in the State of the Union Address; whether it was creating an environment where businesses will thrive if they insource jobs, or giving college students better access to jobs in a growing economy. Jobs and creating more mobility opportunities for the lower and middle classes seemed to be the most significant theme of the night as he began to correlate different happenings to the growing job market. Obama introduced different men and women throughout his speech to emphasize the hardworking middle class and highlight the financial burden they sometimes endure. He also mentioned his plans to raise minimum wage for federal workers and providing women with equal pay and opportunities in the work place.
2. Health Care: He advertised Obamacare’s availability to all American citizens; it’s quickly approaching March 31st deadline, and the overall simplicity of signing up for the program through the operating site. However, I noticed that President Obama did not deeply discuss the faults at the launch of the website nor did he touch on the long process it took to restore the website for potential use.
3. Congress and Bipartisanship: President Obama also addressed the fact that Congress representatives were sent by the people to represent the people. He expressed his hope for Congress to separate its arguments over the size of the government and other contrasting views in order to make progress by passing important legislation through the Houses.
Unemployment: -Every American has skills to fill jobs -Biden is starting an across the board of America training program to match people's skills with jobs that need to be filled -Help Americans return to workforce faster by reforming unemployed insurance- fulfill unemployment insurance that just expired -CEOs need to give long time unemployed people a fair chance -Also have to prepare tomorrow's workforce by guaranteeing every child world class education
Education: -Find "new ways to measure how kids think not how well they can fill in a bubble on a test" -One of the best investments we can make in a child's life is high quality education -Request every state to make high quality pre-k available for every 4 yr old -Working to resign high schools and partner them with colleges & employers -No middle class kid should be priced out of a high quality education -Help the millions of Americans who feel trapped by student loan debt -Help black boys stay on text and reach full attention -Want every child to have same chance America gave them-Obamas
Women in the work industry: -Women deserve equal pay for equal work -Deserve to have a baby without sacrificing job -"Give every woman the opportunity she deserves because I believe when women succeed America succeeds"
Poverty/minimum wage: -No one who works full time should ever have to raise a family in poverty -"Do what you can to raise your employee's wages" -President Obama wants to raise minimum wage to $10.10/hour but congress needs to get on board -"Join the rest of the country. Say yes. Give America a raise"
“Political without being partisan” was the repeated post-speech quote from NBC White House Correspondent Chuck Todd. Through further analysis Todd explained that President Obama addressed all issues in a manner that did not divide the Democratic Party nor completely oppose the Republican Party.
Income/job equality: President Obama’s speech linked education, immigration, and reforms back to improving the economy. President Obama specifically called for equal pay for female employees. “I believe when women succeed, America succeeds,” President Obama exclaimed after a strategically placed reference to the retrogressive society of the television program Mad Men. President Obama expressed the importance of a $10.10 minimum wag and how it will improve the economy; therefore working toward income equality for the middle class saying, “Say yes. Give America a raise.” More affordable education, including higher education and pre-kindergarten education, were topics President Obama used to support future improvement in job and income equality. Mr. President continued to reference the ideals of the “American dream” sighting both his own and Speaker of the House, John Boehner’s, humble beginnings.
Health Care: President Obama took the time to speak highly of the Affordable Care Act. One example in the State of the Union Address that supported the Affordable Care Act was the story of a single mother who signed up for Health Care on January 1st and need the health insurance on the 3rd on January, essentially avoiding bankruptcy by signing up for Obamacare. During the Health Care portion of President Obama’s address, Mr. President explained that the American people continue to have both the power and responsibility to move America forward, and congress should not hinder that progress.
American Diplomacy: President Obama concluded his speech in a way that supported NBC White House Correspondent, Chuck Todd’s summary of the address, “Political without being partisan.” President Obama finished the address with foreign affairs and the importance of trying American diplomacy to stop nuclear weapon development before stepping back into a war. Referencing both the upcoming Winter Olympic Games and a brave American soldier, Cory Remsburg, President Obama insured an ever-improving protection of the United States of America against terrorism and the ever-present American spirit.
#1. Repealing budget cuts: President Obama highlighted some of the drawbacks of recent budget cuts. Cuts on the medical research funding have significantly slowed progress on projects that were working to help save lives. He believes that that the medical research budget should be restored so that cures can be created that will save the lives of many American people.
#2. Foreign policy with Israel and Palestine: The conflict in Israel was briefly discussed in Obama's speech. The President made it clear that the US will continue its solid support of Israel while encouraging Palestine to form an independent state within it's own territory.
#3 Foreign Policy with Iran: The US will continue negotiations with Iran in hopes of coming with up with a peaceful agreement that prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Obama believes that the US will finally find a way to resolve our issues with Iran.
