Baseball has played an integral role in my life for as long
as I can remember. Sports have always been a major part of my family’s
tradition, with America’s pastime at the forefront. I began playing Little
League at 4 years old, although I had already logged many hours of batting
practice and playing catch in the backyard. As I got older and rose through the
ranks of the Potomac River Little League, I picked up countless skills which
still help me today. But, nothing can compare to my experience with the Bumpy
Oak Bombers.
The Bumpy
Oak Bombers are a member of the Charles St. Mary’s League, an amateur men’s
league in Southern Maryland. My father has been in the league for nearly 30
years, and has been a member of Bumpy Oak since its inception in 1997. Throughout
my youth I was a fixture at Bomber practices, and never missed a Sunday game. During
the end of my 8th grade year, at the ripe age of 14, I was approached by the
manager of the Bumpy Oak Bombers. He explained that the team would be happy to
have me, and as he handed me the contract I knew I was about to become part of
something special.
I do not
consider Bumpy Oak to be a team, rather I feel we are a family. I look in the
dugout and see men who I refuse to call teammates, because they are so much
more. I look up in the stands and see the wives and children of the players,
the faithful supporting cast who has been there every step of the way. These
are the people who have taught me courage and perseverance. We have become
united through the game of baseball, and are better individuals because of it.
The opportunity to play on this
team has changed my life more than I can explain on these pages. I look forward
to many more years of going to battle with these gentlemen, and relish every
chance I get to step on the field. Baseball has always been my life, and after
joining this team, I know it always will be.
